Tracksters Reach Four NCAA PQ Marks at UCLA Track Meet
March 16, 2002
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Washington State's track and field teams opened the outdoor season with wins over California and narrow losses to UCLA at the UCLA-Cal-WSU Triangular/Dual meet at Drake Stadium on the UCLA campus Saturday.
In the men's 100m dash, Anthony Buchanan won in a personal-best time of 10.24 seconds and Anson Henry was second in 10.34, both NCAA Provisional Qualifying times. Bennie Chatman grabbed fourth for the Cougars in 10.56. This trio of sprinters hooked up with Dan Brink to win the 4x100m relay in an NCAA PQ time of 40.06.
Randi Smith finished second in the women's 400m hurdles but clocked in with an NCAA PQ time of 58.09. This is the fourth consecutive season Smith has reached an NCAA PQ time in the intermediate hurdles.
Team scoring for the men's triangular meet found the Bruins first with 160.5 points, WSU second with 148.5, and California last with 89. In men's dual competition, WSU defeated Cal 120-75, but UCLA scored 104.5 to WSU's 98.5, and defeated Cal 127-68.
In triangular meet scoring on the women's side, it was UCLA (148), WSU (136), and Cal (112). Dual meet results for the women showed WSU over Cal 105-93, UCLA defeats WSU 106-92, and UCLA defeats Cal 111-84.
'We had very good performances by the Cougars - both men and women competed very well and we battled them right down to the wire,' Cougar coach Rick Sloan said. 'We just didn't get enough points on UCLA in the overall competition or the dual meet but nevertheless I'm very pleased with the way we competed and the results.'
Additional highlights for the Cougar men included Dione Cason and Qieed Ishmael going one-two in the 400m dash, Jon Welsh winning the steeplechase, a first through third finish in the javelin from Matt McGee, Nate Cummings, and Curt Borland, and Patrick Harrigan winning the high jump.
Redshirt junior Ellannee Richardson had a noteable day as the All-America heptathlete won the 100m hurdles with Smith finishing second, anchored the winning 4x100m relay team, finished second in the 200m dash with Erin Reed and Bree Skinner taking third and fourth, and finished second to Cougar freshman Rachel Bertholf's winning javelin toss, but by a mere seven inches.
The Cougar track and field teams head to Tempe, Arizona, next weekend for the two-day Baldy Castillo Invitational meet hosted by Arizona State.
'Our javelin guys in their first competition of the year came out and did a tremendous job with PRs for Matt McGee and Nate Cummings and a good throw by Curt Borland who is coming off elbow surgery. I'm very happy with the men's javelin throwing.
'The women's javelin throwing was not a bad job either considering it was their first competition. Ellannee, Cicely and the others only practiced one time before we came down to LA. That's a great job.
'Sammy Jo Missel had a lifetime best in the hammer throw.
'Very good early season marks for Anthony and Anson in the sprints. Lifetime best for Anthony in the 100m. And very good runs by Dione Cason and Qieed Ishmael in the open 400 and a lifetime best for Qieed - I'm real pleased with the progress he's making.
'Steve Dwyer with PRs in the high and intermediate hurdles did an outstanding job in both races so a great week for Steve.
'Solid high hurdles performance by Ellannee and Randi and then Randi with a very good season-opener in the intermediate hurdles. That's an event that takes a little time to cultivate and she did a great job coming out the first meet of the year and knocking down an NCAA qualifier right there. Really happy with her effort.
'That men's 4x100m relay time was the fastest we've run in a long time. It was a very conservative run. The passes were conservative and that 40.06 time is a tremendous time to get the season started with and I'm looking forward to improving on that in the weeks to come.
'Anna Blue did a great job in both the 3000m and the 1500m - doubling back. The 3000m is a PR for her.
'Jon Welsh had a big kick at the end of the men's steeplechase to win and I know the times on the results are incorrect.
'I would have liked to win down here against UCLA but we beat Cal without too much trouble. It was a good performance for us. We have the season started and we want to keep building off of it.'
