LeRoy And Dong Ready For NCAA Swim Championships
March 18, 2002
LeRoy will swim three events in which she established WSU records this season. The native of Nanaimo, British Columbia, holds school records for the 200 backstroke (1:59.64), the 200 individual medley (2:02.75) and the 400 individual medley (4:21.67). LeRoy also holds the WSU record in the 100 backstroke (56.34), third place in the 100 freestyle (51.16) and fourth place in the 200 freestyle (1:51.27). This season, LeRoy placed 23rd in the 200 individual medley at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships.
LeRoy competes in one event each day of the NCAA's, with the 200 individual medley held Thursday, the 400 individual medley Friday, and the 200 backstroke Saturday.
Dong will compete in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, both held Friday at the competition. The team co-captain from Paramount, Calif. placed fifth in the 100 butterfly and 16th in the 100 breaststroke at the 2002 Pac-10 Championships. Dong currently holds the Washington State record in the 100 butterfly (54.75) and second for the 100 breaststroke (1:03.54). She also holds the second position on the school's all-time top-10 lists for three other events, the 50 freestyle (23.51), 200 breaststroke (2:20.09) and 200 individual medley (2:06.55), as well as fifth place for the 100 freestyle (51.09).
The talent present at the 2002 NCAA Championships again makes it one of the fastest meets in the world. LeRoy is currently ranked 34th in the world for the 200 individual medley and 28th in the NCAA. Dong ranks 53th in the world for the 100 butterfly and 31st in the NCAA.
Washington State has now sent athletes to the NCAA Women's Swimming Championships for five consecutive years. Erin Eldridge became the first Cougar swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Championships in 1998, also Rocco Aceto's first year as head coach. Eldridge returned to the NCAA's for the 100 and 200 breaststroke events in 1999 and 2000, three times garnering All-America honors. Last year, Melissa Hubley represented Washington State in both the 100 and 200 butterfly.
