McAndrews Delivers In Baseball's 8-6 Win At San Diego State

SAN DIEGO - Junior Travis McAndrews hit a pinch-hit, three-run home run in the seventh inning Monday and the USC Trojans won their fifth straight with an 8-6 win against the San Diego State Aztecs in non-conference action. McAndrews hit a 3-2 pitch from Aztec reliever Erik Fielder with two outs into right field at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

USC improved to 12-9 overall on the season while San Diego State fell to 18-9.

The Trojans scored first with a run in the second. Joey Metropoulos led off with a single and reached second on a groundball to San Diego State second baseman Carlo Cota that pulled shortstop Garrett Changnon off the bag. Metropoulos scored on a single to left by USC third baseman Michael Moon on a close play at the plate.

The Aztecs tied the game in the bottom of the second after right fielder Jake McLintock led off with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch by Trojan starter Fraser Dizard and scored on an RBI single by catcher Brian Manfred. USC took a 4-1 lead with a run in the third on an RBI single by second baseman Anthony Lunetta and two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by left fielder Kris Cox and Moon scoring on a wild pitch by Aztec starter Joe Carque.

San Diego State tied the game with a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. USC catcher Alberto Concepcion added an insurance run for the Trojans in the ninth with a solo shot to left, his fourth of the season. Concepcion's homer against Aztec closer Royce Ring was the first run allowed by Ring in 13 innings this season.

Metropoulos and Concepcion now have team-high, eight-game hitting streaks.

Bret Butler improved to 2-1 on the season for the Trojans as Cory Campos picked up his first save of the season.

The Trojans will finish their streak of 22 road games to open the 2002 season tomorrow against Loyola Marymount at 2 p.m. USC will play its first games in the renovated Dedeaux Field this weekend with a non-conference series against top-ranked Stanford. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday (March 23) at 1 p.m. with the series finale on Sunday (March 24) also at 1 p.m. All games will be broadcast live on
