Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON junior outfielder Jay Garthwaite has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and USC sophomore right-hander Jon Williams has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 13-18, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Garthwaite, from Kent, Wash., hit .538 (7-for-13) against Brigham Young last week. In the Huskies' 15-8 opening victory, he went 4-for-5 with two triples and a home run, scoring three runs and knocking in two RBI. In the final game of the series, a 12-12 tie with the Cougars, Garthwaite went 3-for-4 with a triple, home run and stolen base. He scored two runs and had five RBI.
Williams, from Alamo, Calif., led USC to a 5-3 win at Pepperdine Mar. 16. After allowing a leadoff single and sacrifice, the sophomore right-hander retired the next two batters, and threw five perfect innings after that. Williams retired 18 straight batters, striking out two, while allowing two hits and no walks.
The Player of the Week honor is the second for Garthwaite in his career, and the 39th selection all-time for Washington. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for Williams in his career, and the 49th selection all-time for USC.
