Track And Field Hosts Oregon And BYU On Saturday

March 19, 2002

The USC men's and women's track and field teams host Oregon and Brigham Young at Katherine B. Loker Stadium on the campus of USC on Saturday, March 23. The Trojan men will take on both the Oregon and BYU men, while the defending NCAA champion Women of Troy will compete against the BYU women. Only the USC-BYU matchup will be scored. It's the last home meet of the season for USC. The Trojan seniors, as well as the 1952 and 1977 teams, will be honored. Saturday's events begin at 11:15 a.m. with the women's 3000-meter run. The first relay is the women's 400-meter relay at 12:05 p.m. The first field event is at 11:30 a.m. with the women' s pole vault.

So far this season, the Women of Troy have four NCAA automatic qualifying marks, seven NCAA provisional marks and 11 Pac-10 qualifying marks. The Trojan men have one NCAA automatic, one NCAA provisional and 15 Pac-10 marks. The Women of Troy are led by senior thrower Cynthia Ademiluyi, who has an NCAA automatic 54-8 in the shot and an NCAA provisional 176-4 in the discus, and by sophomore thrower L'Orangerie Crawford, who has NCAA automatics of 202-5 in the hammer and 53-4 1/4 in the shot. The Trojan men are led by sophomore Julien Kapek, who broke the 27-year old school record in the triple jump on March 2 with an NCAA automatic distance of 55-2 3/4, and by senior decathlete Russell Silvers, who garnered an NCAA provisional mark by recording a personal-best 7,151 at the Trojan Classic on March 17-18.

The Duck men bring two 2001 NCAA champions to Loker Stadium: decathlete Santiago Lorenzo and javelin thrower John Stiegeler. Lorenzo has a best of 7,889 in the decathlon and bests of 51.70 in the 400m IH, 201-4 in the javelin and 16-0 3/4 in the pole vault. Stiegler has a best of 252-10 in the javelin. The Ducks also have a fine sprinter in Samie Parker (formerly of Long Beach Poly) who was a Pac-10 scorer in the 100m last season and an Indoor All-American in the 60m dash in 2002.

The Brigham Young Cougars will bring both their men's and women's team to Loker Stadium. The Cougar women, winners of the last four Mountain West Conference indoor track titles, are led by javelin thrower Lindsay Johnson, who owns an NCAA provisional qualifying mark already this season (161-0) and indoor distance All-American Lindsay Thomsen. The Cougar men are led by indoor All-American pole vaulter Jeff Hansen and long jumper Aron Szmuda.

There are no outdoor rankings yet by the various track media outlets, but on the women's side, Track and Field News has chosen USC as the top team and BYU 10th in 2002. The Oregon men are ranked eighth.

Saturday is the last home meet for 12 USC men and nine USC women. The 12 Trojan men won two Pac-10 championships in their careers, finished second two other times, had three top seven finishes at the NCAAs and ended the 22-meet losing streak to UCLA. The nine Women of Troy seniors formed the core of the squad that brought USC its first NCAA women's team title in 2001. In that group is the finest sprinter in USC history--Angela Williams--and three other All-Americans.

1952 AND 1977 REUNIONS

Members of the 1952 and 1977 men's squads return to campus to be honored on Saturday. The 1952 team won coach Jess Mortensen's second NCAA title and was the fourth in an NCAA- record eight-straight championships for the Trojans. The 1977 team finished third nationally and won the Pac-10s and was coached by Vern Wolfe.
