Cal Baseball Defeats Saint Mary's, 5-3

BERKELEY, CA - The Cal baseball team, behind a 14-hit attack and solid pitching, defeated Saint Mary's, 5-3 Wednesday at Evans Diamond. The Bears improve to 16-11 on the year and the Gaels go to 8-11.
At the plate, Cal was led by freshman center fielder David Nicholson, who went 3-for-4 with a double and a solo home run in the third inning. Conor Jackson, Carson White and Noah Jackson added two hits apiece and sophomore shortstop Jeff Dragicevich hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.
The winning pitcher for the Bears was sophomore reliever Blake Read (1-0), who came in in the third inning and pitched 3.0 innings with six hits, two runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Freshman reliever Kyle Crist threw well, pitching 2.0 innings with two hits, no runs, one walk and four strikeouts. Redshirt freshman Jesse Ingram ended up earning his first save of the year, pitching the eighth and ninth innings (one hit, one run, one walk, one strikeout).
The losing pitcher for Saint Mary's was reliever Matt Dolen (1.7 innings, four hits, two runs, one walk). Mark Teahen had three hits for the Gaels and Jason Waugh and Tim Spooner had two hits apiece. Spooner had a solo home run in the ninth inning.
Cal next travels to Washington State for a three-game conference series beginning Friday, Mar. 22 at 2 p.m. in Lewiston, ID (due to weather conditions in Pullman, WA).
