Cougar Tennis Wins Again In Hawaii
March 22, 2002
Honolulu, Hawaii--- The No. 46 WSU women's tennis team continued its winning ways by defeating Hawaii 7-0 Thursday.
The Cougars once again enjoyed the Hawaiian sunshine and controlled the doubles competition. WSU won all three matches and the doubles point. With WSU's No. 16 tandem of Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna sitting out the No. 1 doubles match, Cougars Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez stepped in and won 8-4 over Hawaii's Stacy Hakikawa and Lauren Fitzgerald. WSU's Zorana Roganovic and Orsolya Sallai triumphed 9-8 at No. 2 doubles, while freshmen Zsofi Fodor and Nora Gaal tallied an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.
'We are extremely pleased with the play of our team today,' said Washington State coach Cari Groce. 'Nora and Zsofi both stepped in and played very well. It is obvious that we have four young players who can play at the 4-6 positions.'
The Cougars (6-5) also won all six singles matches. Perkins, a senior ranked 50th nationally, beat Hawaii's Fitzgerald 6-2, 6-7, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles position. McKenna, ranked 72nd by the ITA, posted a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Hakikawa.
WSU freshman Sallai edged Birgitte Brubakken 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Arias, a sophomore, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles over Polina Kravets.
The Cougars return to action Friday against Clemson in Honolulu.
