Coy Guaranteed All-America finish

ALBANY, N.Y. - Oregon State 174-pounder Nathan Coy guaranteed himself All-America honors with a pair of wins in Friday night's session at the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Pepsi Arena. Coy, a senior, can finish no lower than sixth at his weight and could finish as high as third.

OSU is tied for 33rd place in the team standings going into Saturday's final day of competition. Two other Beaver seniors, 184-pounder Isaac Weber and heavyweight Jason Cooley, saw their collegiate careers end with losses in the Friday morning session.

Coy, seeded 11th, won four matches on Friday to assure that he'll earn OSU's 81st All-America finish. In the morning session, he beat Jim Stanec of Cornell 6-1 and Nick Passolano of Iowa State 2-0, in the evening, he topped 12th-seeded John Kopinsky of Missouri 4-1 and then defeated Michael Barger of Oklahoma 5-2.

To begin Saturday's action, Coy will meet sixth-seeded Rick Springman of Pennsylvania, Springman sent Coy into the wrestleback bracket with a 5-2 decision in Thursday's second round. If Coy wins, he wrestles for third place, if he loses, he wrestles for fifth. His opponent at that point will be either top-seeded Otto Olson of Michigan or third-seeded Josh Koscheck of Edinboro.

Cooley, seeded seventh, won his first match Friday morning with a major decision over Craig Tefft of Binghamton by a 13-4 score. He was then eliminated by Steven Kovach of Navy in a 3-2 decision.

Weber was knocked out of the tournament in his first match on Friday, losing a major decision to fifth-seeded Viktor Sveda of Indiana 18-5.
