Former Men's Soccer Standout Greg Howes Earns First National Cap For U.S. Futsal Team

March 22, 2002

Former Oregon State men's soccer standout Greg Howes earned his first national cap when he made his international debut and helped the U.S. Futsal National Team to a 10-0 drubbing of Canada on Wednesday in Baltimore, Md., in what was the first-ever international futsal match on American soil.

Howes tallied an assist on the third goal of the game after earning the start.

A day later, Howes helped the U.S. team to a 1-1 draw against the Mexican national squad in Washington, D.C.

Howes, who played at OSU during the 1998 and 1999 seasons, graduated from OSU ninth on the career points list and third on the all-time assists list in only two seasons. Howes also plays professionally for the 'A' League's Portland Timbers.

Futsol is similar to indoor soccer, but the courts have no walls and teams consist of five players instead of six.
