Nathan Peterson and Matt Gentry Continue Competition at NCAA Championships
March 21, 2002
Albany, NY - Stanford's four wrestlers faced tough competition this morning at the 2002 Division I NCAA Wrestling Championships in Albany, New York. In the Pepsi Arena, each Cardinal wrestler dropped his opening match, sending all four to the consolation bracket. In Session 2 this afternoon, freshman Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) and sophomore Nathan Peterson (Georgetown, IN/Floyd Central) tallied wins to keep them going.
Gentry lost an 8-1 decision to 11th-seed Jerrod Sanders (Oklahoma St.) to find himself in the wrestlebacks for Session 2, but rebounded with an 11-5 victory over the Citadel's Wayne Watts. Gentry takes on Adrian Austin (George Mason) on Friday morning.
Peterson dropped his opening match to the 12th-seed Twam Pham (Illinois) on a 3-1 decision, but bounced back by pinning Trap McCormack (Lock Haven) at 1:59. Peterson will face second-seeded Leroy Vega (Minnesota) in Session 3 on Friday morning.
Freshman Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) had a rough showing in his first NCAA appearance, being pinned by Oklahoma's Nate Parker at 0:57 and then dropping a 5-2 decision to Oregon's Brian Watson.
Senior Levi Weikel-Magden (Boardman, OR/Riverside) finished his Stanford career today with a close 9-7 loss to Clarion's Jeremy Reitz and then a technical fall to Gabe Webster (Cornell) at 7 minutes. With 27 victories, Weikel-Magden more than doubled his win total from last season and posted a 6-1 Pac-10 record before finishing fourth at the conference championships. As a captain, Weikel-Magden helped lead the Cardinal to one of its best seasons and as a senior contributed leadership and experience to a young Cardinal squad.
Peterson and Gentry will resume competition at 10 a.m. (ET). For complete tournament coverage, please refer to the official NCAA site at www.ncaachampionships.com.
