Northwestern Edges No. 8 California, 1-0

March 23, 2002

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Northwestern (8-6-1) knocked off the eighth-ranked Golden Bears, 1-0, Saturday in the Hawaii Invitational at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. California defeated Nippon Sports Science University No. 1, 3-2, in an exhibition game this morning, which counts towards the tournament's bracket seeding.

The Bears needed extra innings to dispatch Nittaidai No. 1, as Cal scored two runs in the eighth inning of the international tie-breaker format to collect an exhibition win. Freshman pitcher Cassie Bobrow threw six innings, striking out four while giving up three hits. Fellow freshman Kelly Anderson relieved her in the top of the seventh, going two innings with a strikeout and a walk.

Junior Veronica Nelson hit her second exhibition homerun of the tournament.

In the second game, senior pitcher Jocelyn Forest and Wildcats' ace, Lauren Schwendimann, were involved in a pitching dual. Forest threw her 17th complete game, striking out nine batters, while giving up four hits. Schwendimann threw seven shutout innings with four strikeouts and six hits surrendered.

Unfortunately for Forest, Northwestern came out with the longer end of the stick as they used a late run to deliver the victory for Schwendimann.

The pivotal moment in the game came in the top of the seventh. Northwestern's Carrie Leto led off the inning with a single up the middle. The next batter, Gretchen Barnes, grounded to Nelson, who attempted to take out Leto at second. An errant throw allowed Leto to advance to third and Barnes to reach second. Schwendimann helped her own cause by singling to center, bringing in the lone run of the game.

The one-run loss marked the fifth time Forest had lost by just a run. The Bears stranded nine runners and went 1-for-10 with runners on base.

Cal now waits for the rest of round robin play to wrap up. Seeding for bracket competition, tomorrow, will be determined later this afternoon.
