No. 15 Ranked Softball Sweeps San Jose State, 1-0 and 6-1

March 25, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 15 ranked Oregon State University softball team swept its double-header with San Jose State University in Monday's home-opening action at the OSU Softball Complex. The Beavers (26-9) won the first game, 1-0, and then took game number two by a score of 6-1.

'It was a good day,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Anytime you get two wins, it's a good day. We started off slow but I think that was to be expected after having such a long time off.'

Senior pitcher Crystal Draper struck-out nine batters and allowed just four hits in the first game to improve to 9-2 on the season.

With the game scoreless headed into the final half of the seventh inning, OSU catcher Traci Feldt singled to lead things off for the Beavers. Freshman Miranda Dellinger entered the game as a pinch runner and after a pop-up to third, stole second base. Junior Clare Burnum followed with a single to left field that was bobbled by Becca Baldridge. Dellinger advanced to third on the play and Burnum cruised into second. Steph Adams loaded the bases after drawing a walk off replacement pitcher Brianne Ferguson.

Ferguson proceeded to strikeout Brynnen Guthrie for the second out, but walked in the game's lone run on five pitches to Shelly Prochaska.

Burnum led all players with a 3-for-4 effort from the plate, including her 11th double of the season, while Feldt finished 2-for-3.

Game-two saw the Beaver bats come alive. OSU pounded 10 hits by nine different players.

A four-run third inning provided Oregon State with a comfortable cushion. The Beavers capitalized on five singles in the inning and all four runs crossed the plate with two outs.

OSU added a pair of runs in the fourth behind three hits while SJSU (13-26) scored its lone run of the day in the fifth.

'Offensively, I was disappointed in how we came out in the first game,' said Walker. 'We did much better in the second game, from the second inning on - we brushed it off and picked it up.'

Junior hurler Kristen Hunter allowed six hits and struck-out four in five innings of action before Monica Hoffman closed out the game.

Burnum was the lone Beaver to have a pair of hits in the contest, finishing 2-for-4. Alana Mendoza scored a pair of runs while Kelly Petersen and Feldt had two RBI each.

Oregon State improves its record at the OSU Softball Complex to 9-2, including a streak of seven straight wins.

The Beavers return to action when they host UNLV on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
