Rowing Hosts UCLA Saturday At USC Boathouse
March 25, 2002
LOS ANGELES - The USC women's rowing team hosts crosstown rival UCLA in the first annual dual race between the two teams this Saturday, March 30 at the USC Boathouse located at Berth 192 in the port of Los Angeles. The first event will take place at 9 a.m. and the last crew will row at 10 a.m.
Saturday's race will decide who will capture all five points awarded in women's rowing for the Lexus Gauntlet Challenge -- a season-long competition between USC and UCLA. This unique program awards points for the winner of each Bruin-Trojan head-to-head athletic contest throughout the year. The Lexus Gauntlet trophy will be awarded to the school with the most points at year's end. USC currently leads 47.5-35.0.
USC and UCLA will each race a Varsity Eight, JV Eight, Varsity Four and Novice Eight boat. The race winner will be determined by a point system similar to the one used at the Pac-10 Championships. With only two boats in each race, three points will be awarded to the Varsity Eight winner, two to the JV Eight and one apiece to the winners of the Varsity Fours and Novice Eights.
The Trojans last raced on Saturday, March 23, against San Diego State. USC's Varsity Eight beat the Aztecs by nearly 30 seconds, while the JV boat finished in a tie and the Novice boats were defeated by SDSU.
The Bruins, currently in their first year of competition as a scholarship sport, competed at the Berg Cup in Newport Beach last week. The Varsity Eights finished third in their race, trailing first-place finisher San Diego by 13 seconds.
