No. 14 Ranked Softball Slips Past UNLV, 1-0
March 27, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Timely hitting and a bases loaded walk helped the No. 14 ranked Oregon State University softball team to a 1-0 victory against UNLV on Wednesday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.
With the game scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning, junior Clare Burnum laced a one-out double down the leftfield line to get the Oregon State offense on track. Senior Michelle Chariton followed with an infield single to shortstop, her second hit of the afternoon, and Burnum advanced to third. After Brynnen Guthrie's walk and a force-out at the plate, freshman Kelly Petersen watched as a full-count, two-out pitch was called inside, resulting in ball-four and Chariton crossing the plate as the game-winning run.
'Clare's (Burnum) double was a huge hit, and it really turned the game around,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'It was nice to see us step-up the intensity offensively in the last two innings - it gave us a chance to win when we got runners on.'
Sophomore pitcher Monica Hoffman struck out nine batters en route to her ninth victory (9-4) on the season. Hoffman has not allowed an earned run in 26 consecutive innings.
Both teams were held to just three hits in the contest.
'It was a close game,' said Walker. 'I felt like we were very evenly matched. Both pitchers threw very well, were very effective, and got a lot of ground balls.'
Oregon State (27-9) opens Pacific-10 Conference action on Friday against in-state rival University of Oregon (18-9). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
