Skinner Paces Women's Golf At Duck Invite, Tied For 15th

March 28, 2002

LEBANON, Ore. - -

Laura Skinner shot a second-round 74 on Monday to lead the Oregon State women's golf team and put herself in a tie for 15th heading into Friday's final 18 holes at the par-72, 5,975-yard Mallard Creek Golf Club.

The Beavers are in 13th place after opening the day with a 310 and finishing with a 317, and are within five shots of 10th-place Colorado. The teams played under cool, sometimes drizzly conditions on the young, undulating course in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains.

'We have to play like we're capable of playing tomorrow,' 12th-year coach Rise Lakowske said. 'I think they're right on the verge, but they've been right there for a while now. It's important that we beat a couple of these teams ahead of us.'

Skinner, a sophomore from Boise, Idaho, equaled her third lowest score of the year with the 74, which came on the heels of a 77 to open the day. Skinner's career-best finish is a tie for 24th, which came last fall at the Stanford Invitational. Skinner is among seven players tied at 151.

Junior Stacie Ferguson carded an afternoon 74 after opening with an 81, and is tied for 32nd with a 155. One of OSU's more consistent golfers throughout her career, Ferguson is in position to make a charge for her first top-25 finish of the spring season.

Also at 155 is freshman Alex Lucio, who is playing as an individual. Lucio played a consistent game in both rounds, shooting 78 and 77 on the hilly layout.

Sophomore Kelly Ferris tied for 50th after a 159, and Ashlei Pendleton is three shots back in a tie for 60th.

Freshman Kelly Kerkvliet tallied a 174 to tie for 79th.

The Beavers will be grouped with Boise State and Montana State for Friday's final round, which begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

In the team competition, Washington opened an impressive 16-stroke lead over Idaho, as the Huskies shot 586.

San Francisco's Susannah Laing shot a 143 to forge a three-stroke lead over Washington State's Kim Welch and Lindsay Morgan of Washington.
