Men's Tennis Shuts Out Oregon In Pac-10 Opener

STANFORD, Calif. - Fifth-ranked Stanford University (14-1 overall, 1-0 Pac-10) opened its quest for a fifth straight Pacific-10 Conference title with a 7-0 win over visiting Oregon (11-4, 0-1) on Friday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center.
Stanford swept all three doubles matches to open the dual, and then captured five of the six singles matches in straight sets.
At No. 1 singles, Stanford senior K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA) rallied from an early deficit to defeat Manuel Kost (Kuessnacht, Switzerland) 6-3, 6-2. Kost took a 3-1 lead in the first set before the fourth-ranked Hippensteel won 11 of the final 13 games to improve to 17-2 on the season.
In the only three-set match, Stanford freshman Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA) battled the Ducks' Greg Duboiurdieu (Perreux, France) for nearly three hours at No. 6 singles. Sheng eventually prevailed 7-6, 2-6, 7-6, and has now won five of his last six.
Stanford returns to action on Saturday when it hosts No. 34 at Washington at noon at the Taube Tennis Center as The Garden Court Hotel Presents 'Pac-10 Weekend.' Oregon visits California on Saturday at noon.
