Sophomore Hurler Monica Hoffman Throws No-Hitter As No. 14 Beavers Beat Oregon, 1-0

April 2, 2002

EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon State sophomore hurler Monica Hoffman pitched her third career no-hitter on Tuesday afternoon as the Beavers beat in-state rival University of Oregon, 1-0.

Hoffman struckout seven batters and allowed just two walks in the game. She becomes just thesecond Oregon State player to throw three no-hitters (she and senior Crystal Draper) during their career and the first to have three in a single season. Hoffman has not allowed an earned run in 33 straight innings of work.

With the victory, Oregon State sweeps the season series with Oregon for the second consecutive year and improves to 30-9 overall and 3-0 in Pacific-10 Conference action. Oregon falls to 18-21 and 0-3 in Pac-10 play.

'Our momentum from the weekend carried us into today,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker.

Senior Jenni Jodoin gave the Beavers the only run that they would need when she belted a first inning double to right-center field that plated Kelly Petersen who led off the frame with a walk.

Oregon was unable to get things going offensively and OSU junior Brynnen Guthrie helped keep Hoffman's no-hitter intact in the third inning when she backhanded a shot by Lynsey Haij and tossed it to Jodoin at first for the final out.

The Ducks registered their lone baserunner of the day when catcher Jen Poore reached base on a leadoff walk in the fifth inning. Hoffman was credited with a pair of walks in the contest after Amber Hutchison reached base on balls 16 days earlier, prior to the game being halted because of snow.

Hoffman sat down the final six Duck batters in order to record the victory.

'Monica threw well,' said Walker. 'She got behind in the count a couple of batters but overall did a nice job and it was a great outing.'

Oregon State managed just five hits in the contest with Michelle Chariton's 2-for-3 effort from the plate leading the way.

Junior Clare Burnum extended her hitting streak to eight games with a single in the third inning. The Canby, OR, native also recorded her team-best eighth stolen base of the year.

Oregon State returns to action on Friday when the Beavers host No. 8 California. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex.
