ESPN Classics To Broadcast 1982 Big Game April 5 at 6 p.m. PT
April 4, 2002
BERKELEY - ESPN Classics will replay an abbreviated version of the famous 1982 Big Game, Friday, April 5, from 6-8 p.m. PT.
Relive the excitement of one of the most memorable collegiate football games ever.
Although each Big Game could be considered a classic in its own right, some have been more memorable than others. The 1982 Big Game, which attracted nationwide attention thanks to Cal's incredible five-lateral, 57-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as time ran out, certainly fits this description.
Trailing, 20-19, following Mark Harmon's 35-yard field goal with four seconds to play, the Bears, after benefiting from a 15-yard penalty on Stanford, took the ensuing kickoff all the way into the end zone, and through the Stanford band, for the winning score. Kevin Moen (who fielded the kick and eventually scored on the play), Richard Rodgers, Dwight Garner and Mariet Ford, etched their names into football history with the amazing and dramatic return. Ditto Gary Tyrell, the Stanford trombonist who was bowled over by Moen in the end zone following the winning score. The Bears game-winning drive has since been remembered as The Play.
