No. 14 Oregon State Edges Sixth-Ranked California, 3-2
April 5, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The 14th-ranked Oregon State Beavers (31-9, 4-0 Pac-10) came from behind to defeat No. 6 California (35-12, 2-2 Pac-10), 3-2, on the strength of Steph Adam's three run shot to left in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Golden Bears scored first in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Chelsea Spencer led off with a single to left. Jessica Pamanian attempted a sacrifice bunt and reached base when the Beavers' third baseman Clare Burnam's attempted force out at second failed. Junior Jen Deering, who made a rare appearance as a designated player, was out on a short chopper to the pitcher, but advanced the runners.
Spencer then scored from third on Crystal Draper's wild pitch. With two outs, freshman Kaleo Eldredge smashed a RBI double off the right field fence to score Pamanian for the 2-0 lead.
Adams' second homer of the season was setup when Michelle Chariton and Brynnen Guthrie hit back-to-back infield singles towards the shortstop. Shelly Prochaska then placed a sacrifice bunt putting both runners in scoring position. Adams followed with the eventual game-winning homer.
Senior pitcher Jocelyn Forest struck out three batters on her way to her 20th complete game of the season. Cal grounded into a season-high two double plays in the second and sixth frames to kill the inning. Eldredge led the Bears with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, including a RBI, while junior Courtney Scott, who leads the team in batting (.374), went 2-for-3.
'I thought we had a good hitting performance by Kaleo (Eldredge) and Courtney Scott had a great game going 2-for-3,' said coach Diane Ninemire. 'It was just unfortunate that their first two batters reached base and they hit the homer. In the last inning, we should have scored Pamanian from third, but left her stranded.'
The Bears travel to Oregon for a two-game set starting tomorrow at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
