Benko Sets World Record In 200m Free

April 7, 2002

Former Trojan Lindsay Benko broke the world record in the 200m freestyle on the final day of the 2002 Short Course World Championships in Moscow, Russia, on Sunday (April 7).

Benko won the event in 1:54.04, well ahead of second-place Yu Yang of China (1:55.34). Benko's time was just under the old world record, owned by Claudia Poll of Costa Rica, who swam a 1:54.17 on April 18, 1997.

The title is Benko's second of the meet. She also won the 200m backstroke earlier in the week.

USC junior Erik Vendt was also in action on Sunday, competing in the timed finals of the 1500m free. He finished fourth in 14:45.62. Austrailian long-distance legend Grant Hackett won the event in 14:33.94.
