Bruins Complete First Day at the San Diego Crew Classic

San Diego, Calif. - At the end of first day of the 29th Annual San Diego Crew Classic, the UCLA women's rowing team has qualified two boats for Sunday's events, the Varsity 8 and the Novice 8. The JV 8 completed their weekend finishing fourth in the Women's JV 3RD Finals.

In Varsity action, the Bruins competed for a spot in the Women's Cal Cup Finals. The Bruins (7:17.57) finished fifth in their heat behind Duke (6:51.80), Minnesota (6:55.28), University of San Diego (7:09.13), and San Diego State (7:12.52).Santa Clara (7:25.76) and Long Beach State (7:25.85) finished sixth and seventh in the heat, respectively. The Bruins will advance to the Women's Cal Cup 3RD Finals tomorrow, scheduled to begin at 9:40 a.m.

During the morning races, the UCLA JV 8 finished sixth in their heat to qualify for the Women's JV 3RD Finals, held later at 2:20 p.m. Cal (7:00.29) won the heat, followed by Texas (7:06.80), Notre Dame (7:11.05), Stanford (7:13.56), Duke (7:14.18), UCLA (7:30.54), and UCSD (8:14.02).

In the Women's JV 3RD Finals, the UCLA JV 8 completed their weekend finishing fourth in the event. In a very tight finish, Duke (7:5.26) edged San Diego State (7:06.08) to capture the victory. Sacramento State (7:09.48) crossed the line next to place third, followed by UCLA (7:16.03), and USD (7:28.33).

The Bruin Novices performed extremely well, qualifying for the Women's Collegiate Novice Grand Final for the first time in ten years. The Bruins (7:17.38) placed second in their heat, behind a very fast Virginia crew (7:00.43). The Bruins finished ahead USD (7:26.30), USC (7:28.20), Orange Coast College (7:35.70), Long Beach State (7:47.18), and Pacific (9:23.54). The UCLA Novice 8 competed against USD, USC, Orange Coast College and Long Beach State earlier this season, edged only by USD at the Berg Cup on March 23. The Women's Collegiate Novice Grand Final is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.

'They're going to have a tough race tomorrow, going against some well established programs,' stated head coach, Amy Fuller. 'It's the first time in ten years that we've been in the Grand Finals, and I'm really excited to be up there.'
