April 9, 2002

FULLERTON - Junior Jordan Olson recorded his best start as a Trojan with six strong innings Tuesday and the USC Trojans defeated the No. 13 Cal State Fullerton Titans, 6-2, in non-conference action at Goodwin Field. Olson, making his third career start, allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

USC improves to 19-14 overall while Cal State Fullerton falls to 21-11 on the season. The Trojans have won seven of their last eight games.

Brian Barre led off the game with a double to right center on the first pitch from Fullerton starter Travis Ingle. Barre advanced to third on a ground ball by shortstop Michael Moon and scored on another ground ball by first baseman Bill Peavey.

Titan shortstop Justin Smyres tied the game in the bottom of the first with a leadoff homer off Olson. After Chris Stringfellow was caught stealing in the second, Olson retired the next 11 Titan batters in a row until a leadoff single by catcher P.J. Pilittere in the sixth.

The Trojans took a 3-1 lead in the fourth when USC greeted Fullerton relief pitcher Jeff Housman by having the first four hitters reach base on hits. Back-to-back doubles by Peavey and freshman Joey Metropoulos were followed by back-to-back singles from Alberto Concepcion and Anthony Lunetta.

An RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded by Michael Morales and sacrifice fly by Matt Bonovich produced two more runs for the Trojans in the sixth.

Pitching with a 6-2 lead, Jon Williams recorded his third save of the season with three scoreless innings, allowing three hits.

The Trojans will travel to No. 2 Stanford this weekend for a crucial Pac-10 Conference series, beginning on Friday (April 12) at 6 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
