Garthwaite Earns Midseason Honor
April 11, 2002
University of Washington outfielder Jay Garthwaite was named a midseason All-American today by Baseball America magazine.
Baseball America, which will carry a college baseball midseason report in its next issue, has selected All-America teams by class and Garthwaite is one of three outfielder selected to the junior team.
Garthwaite, a junior from Kent's Kent-Meridian High School, is batting .355 with 10 home runs and 47 runs batted in. He is among the Pac-10's league leaders in RBI, doubles (10), triples (3) and slugging percentage (.719). His 47 RBI through the first 30 games of the season are more than he had all of last year, when he led the Huskies with 46.
Garthwaite has twice been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week and was the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's National Player of the Week following a performance vs. Washington State and Arizona State in which he collected 16 RBI and four homers in a five-game stretch.
