Softball Hosts Top-Ranked Arizona, No. 6 Arizona State This Weekend

THE LAST TIME OUTThe Ducks were on the verge of a major upset, leading No. 3 Stanford 1-0 last Friday. Oregon belted 10 hits and scored three earned runs, but defensively the Ducks committed four errors that led to four unearned runs, and thus a victory, for the Cardinal. On Saturday, Oregon trailed then-No. 6 California, 3-0, before Alyssa Laux hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to pull Oregon within a run 3-2. The Ducks were unable to score and lost their second straight game by a single run. On Sunday, the Bears came out swinging and walked away with a 7-0 victory.
HEAD COACH BRENT RINCON Begninning his first year as the head coach at the University of Oregon, Brent Rincon (18-15 overall, 18-15 Oregon) brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the program. Originally coming to Oregon to serve as an assistant for the upcoming season, Rincon took over the program as interim head coach in the Fall of 2001 following the depature of previous head coach, Rick Gamez. Rincon has been involved in softball as both a high school coach and as a head coach of various elite ASA travel teams. A highly successful high school and ASA coach in Arizona, Rincon helped develop many players who went on to play at the Division I level. In addition to coaching in the high school and ASA ranks, Rincon was also selected to coach the Arizona High School All-Stars in 1996.
THAT'S THE STORY Despite an 0-6 start to the conference, Oregon has had an opportunity to win five of its six games.The Ducks are outhitting their opponents 230-222, but opponents are scoring 108 earned runs to Oregon's 78. Offensively, the Ducks have put themselves in position to win games, but defensively, Oregon has committed 54 errors to opponents 23.
RECORDS WATCH With her seventh home run of the season against Colorado State, Andrea Vidlund is eighth all time with 18 home runs. Triawn Custer holds the record with 35 career home runs (1998-2001). Pitcher Connie McMurren is currently second all-time with 405 strike outs. Rachelle Taylor holds the strike out record with 474. Vidlund also has 72 career RBI and needs just 11 RBI to break into the top 10 all-time at Oregon.
MORE McMURREN Connie McMurren pitched the first no-hitter of her career in a 5-0 win over UNLV March 26. It was the first no-hitter by an Oregon pitcher since Bethany Smith blanked Simon Fraser in 1998 and the 12th in school history.
YOUNG GUNS Freshman pitcher Lindsay Kontra has posted wins over then-No. 19 Southwest Texas State and then-No. 13 Alabama. Sophomore Anissa Meashintubby is 7-3 with a team-low 1.91 ERA. Meashintubby also leads Oregon with 62 strike outs and has pitched three of Oregon's five shut outs.
RUN PRODUCTION Through 33 games, Oregon has 119 RBI after having just 197 in all 68 games last season. Vidlund has accounted for a team-high 32 RBI this season after having a combined 40 in 2000 and 2001. Newcomer Lakeesha Eversley has 15 RBI while Jenn Poore and Kristi Hall have 13 each.
