Cal Baseball Loses Big to Arizona, 18-9
April 13, 2002
BERKELEY, CA - The Cal baseball team again struggled against visiting Arizona, losing 18-9 Saturday at Evans Diamond. The Bears fall to 22-18 and 5-6 in the conference. Arizona improves to 24-14 and 5-6 in the Pac-10. The Wildcats had won the first game of the series, 8-4, Friday.
Cal ran into problems early, giving up 10 runs to Arizona in the top of the first inning when Bear pitchers Brent Hale (2-2, 0.7 innings, two hits, six runs, four walks, one strikeout) and Mike White walked a combined seven batters. The Wildcats big hit was a grand slam by center fielder Brian Anderson.
Despite the early lopsided score, things got interesting in the bottom of the first and the top of the second. Cal's junior catcher John Baker hit a three-run homer off of Arizona starter Marc Kaiser. Following Baker's home run, Kaiser threw the next pitch behind David Nicholson's head and words were exchanged. Kaiser led off the top of the second with a home run and when he crossed home plate he exchanged words with Baker and was kicked out of the game by home plate umpire Terry Mann. Mann also kicked out Wildcat pitching coach, Jeff Morris, who had pushed Mann. In accordance with Pac-10 rules, Morris is suspended for Sunday's game.
The Bears never really got back into the game, although they did out hit the Wildcats, 15-14. Anderson and Pat Reilly led Arizona at the plate. Anderson finished the game 3-for-6 with five RBI and Reilly was 3-for-6 with two RBI. Chris Cunningham and John Hardy also hit home runs for the Wildcats. Baker and senior second baseman Carson White were Cal's top hitters. Baker was 3-for-4 with four RBI and White was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Freshman left fielder Justin Nelson hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Arizona's winning pitcher was reliever Chris Goodman, who replaced Kaiser in the second inning (2-2, 4.0 innings, seven hits, four earned runs, three walks, one strikeout).
