LMU Tops Bruins in 2nd Annual Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup

Marina del Rey, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team hosted Loyola Marymount today in Ballona Creek for the 2nd Annual Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup. The defending Lions retained the cup with a victory in the varsity race. The Bruin Novices continued to demonstrate their strength with a 1-2 finish over LMU.
In the Novice race, the UCLA Novice 'A' boat took the early advantage and increased their lead by two boat lengths of open water at about the 1250m mark. The UCLA Novice 'B' crew trailed in second with LMU bow to stern and making a move. The UCLA Novice 'A' boat (7:37.92) won the race by a decisive 23-second margin, while the UCLA Novice 'B' crew (8:00.92) finished second, and LMU (8:02.04) crossed the line in third.
In Varsity competition, the Lions took an early advantage over both UCLA crews. Passing the boathouse about the 1250m mark, LMU maintained a lead of three seats of open water over the Bruin Varsity, and the Bruin JV 8 followed two boat lengths behind. The Lions (7:09.38) won the race and captured the 2002 Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup. The Bruin Varsity 8 (7:17.02) finished second, 8-seconds behind LMU, while the Bruin JV 8 (7:33.05) placed third.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday, April 20, at the Stanford Invitational in Redwood Shores, CA. The regatta is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and endure all day.
