No. 10 Softball Crushes No. 3 Stanford, 11-3

April 13, 2002

SEATTLE - After being limited to just one hit a day earlier, the No. 10 Washington softball team unloaded on No. 3 Stanford, downing the Cardinal 11-3 in five innings Saturday at Husky Softball Stadium. With the win, the Huskies snapped a four-game losing skid to improve to 33-13 overall and 2-5 conference play. The Cardinal, who fell to 33-7 and 4-4 in the Pac-10, suffered its worse loss since falling 8-0 to UCLA on April 29, 2001.

The Huskies began the day trailing by two runs as Stanford pushed across both in the first on an RBI single from catcher Jessica Allister, driving in Robin Walker and Sarah Beeson with two outs.

The UW quickly recovered with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the first. UW senior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) began the inning by reaching base on a Cardinal error before moving over to second on a single by sophomore Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.). Simpson then scored on the next play as junior Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) came through with a single through the left side.

After catcher Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) fouled out to left field, Husky first baseman Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) cleared the bases with her second triple of the season, giving the UW a 3-2 lead. Oleson would later score on the team's fourth hit of the inning off the bat of freshman Kathy Fiske (Temecula, Calif.).

Washington kept up the pressure in its next at bat when Rivera lifted her first of two home runs on the day in the bottom of the second to score freshman Steph Nicholson (Tucson, Ariz.) and Roach.

After the Cardinal scored one run in the top of the fourth, the Huskies gained the run back and then some in their half of the fourth. Clark came through with her second hit of the day to score Simpson before Rivera added her second home run of the day to increase the UW lead to 10-3.

The Huskies ended the game early in the bottom of the fifth when Simpson's two-out double scored pinch runner Traci Tawney (Fall City, Wash.) from second base.

UW pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) went the distance to earn the win, improving to 15-7 overall after allowing just two hits and striking out four. Stanford hurler Maureen LeCocq took the loss to fall to 15-7, pitching just one inning before giving way to reliever Tori Nyberg.

The two teams face each other again Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. at Husky Softball Stadium.
