No. 14 Softball Knocks Off No. 6 Arizona State, 1-0
April 13, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Traci Feldt's sixth inning, two-out single knocked in the game's lone run, as the No. 14 Oregon State softball squad beat No. 6 Arizona State on Saturday.
With the victory, the Beavers improve to 32-12 overall and 5-3 in the Pac-10 while ASU falls to 34-10 and 4-3 in conference play.
Both pitchers were in control of the contest and kept the game moving quickly. Just four balls were hit in the air for outs on the afternoon, as nearly every ball was put into play on the ground.
After a 10-minute rain delay at the top of the sixth inning, OSU hurler Kristen Hunter sat the Sun Devils down in order, setting up the game's lone run in the bottom half of the inning.
Brynnen Guthrie laced her third hit of the day to open the frame with a shot off Arizona State third baseman Phelan Wright's glove. Junior Shelly Prochaska advanced Guthrie to second with a sacrifice bunt and Miranda Dellinger entered as a pinch runner for Guthrie. ASU pitcher Erica Beach got Jessica King to fly-out to shallow left field for the second out of the inning, but Feldt sent the next pitch into center field to score the game-winner.
'I felt like we got more intense as the game went on,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'It was a positive experience for us to come out with a win because we were working very hard.'
Hunter (11-4) retired the middle half of the ASU lineup in order, to close out the contest and record her third complete game shutout of the season.
'Kristen Hunter threw a great game,' said Walker. 'She kept their hitters off balance and got some big outs, that seventh inning was about as tough as it gets - she faced three great hitters.'
Guthrie was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate on the afternoon while Michelle Chariton was 2-for-3. Feldt's RBI was her 14th of the season with two outs.
'Traci (Feldt) came up with a clutch hit for us again,' said Walker. 'We were pretty consistent on offense - Erica (Beach) is a very difficult pitcher to hit off of and we didn't get too frustrated.'
The Beavers and Sun Devils close out the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the OSU Softball Complex.
