Varsity Eight Beats No. 18 Iowa

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The ninth-ranked USC women's rowing Varsity Eight boat defeated No. 18 Iowa in a dual race held Saturday morning at the Long Beach Marine Stadium at the Pete Archer Rowing Center. The teams raced a total of three boats -- Varsity Eight, JV Eight, Varsity Four -- as the Hawkeyes garnered victories in the JV and V4 races.
Iowa's JV Eight crew held a lead in the JV Eight race from the start and crossed the finished line 17-seconds ahead of the Trojans who finished in 7:05.2. The Varsity Four was a much tighter race. Despite holding the lead for most of the race, the Trojans were beat in the sprint as Iowa crossed the line in 7:45.3 and USC followed in 7:47.6.
USC never trailed in the featured Varsity Eight race. Pulling ahead at the start, the Trojans crossed the line in a time of 6:30.8. The Hawkeyes finished in 6:36.2.
Long Beach State, who competed in an earlier race in Newport Beach, also participated in two of the races. The 49ers finished third in the Varsity Four race with a time of 7:51.9. LBSU and USC also held a separate Novice Eight race as the Trojans finished first in 7:25.11 and Long Beach State was timed at 7:42.4.
