April 13, 2002

BATON ROUGE, La.- The University of Oregon women's tennis team defeated No. 44-ranked LSU 5-2. It marked the second straight match the Ducks have defeated a ranked opponent on the road, as they beat No. 22 Florida International two weeks ago.

In singles, Oregon's Daria Panova defeated LSU's No. 65-ranked Bruna Colosio, 6-2,6-4.

'This was a great win for Daria, over a three-time All-American,' assistant coach Nils Schyllander said.

Other exciting matches included the singles match between Oregon's Vickie Gunnarsson and LSU's Amanda Mang. Gunnarsson finished with a win over Mang, 7-5, 3-6, (10-8).

In doubles, all the matches were close. The doubles team of Davina Mendiburu and Courtney Nagle came close to taking the match but were edged out by LSU's Bruna Colosio and Rocio Fantilli 9-8 (4). The Duck's doubles team of Ester Bak and Janice Nyland added to the team's momentum with a win over LSU's doubles team of Amanda Mang and Perri Budd, with a score of 8-5.

'We came out fired up after losing the point in doubles,' said Schyllander. 'We had a great match beating a very good LSU team on their home courts.'
