Brown, Conley and Nelson Lead Cal Baseball to 2-1 Victory Over Arizona

BERKELEY, CA - Led by a complete game from sophomore Matt Brown and home runs by Ben Conley and Justin Nelson, the Cal baseball team defeated visiting Arizona 2-1 Sunday at Evans Diamond. The Bears improve to 23-18 and 6-6 in the Pac-10. Arizona goes to 24-15 and 5-7 in the conference. The Wildcats had won the first two game of the series, 8-4, Friday and 18-9 Saturday.
Brown, who is the Bears closer and the Pac-10 leader in saves (six), threw his first career complete game, improving his record to 4-1 with four hits, one run, only one walk and a career-high 10 strikeouts.
Junior center fielder Conley got Cal on the board first when he hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first inning off of Arizona's starter Joe Little (5-4, 6.7 innings, two runs, one walk, five strikeouts). The Wildcats' Brad Hassey tied the game with a lead-off homer in the top of the sixth. The winning run for the Bears came in the bottom of the seventh when freshman left fielder Justin Nelson hit a one-out homer down the right field line off of Little.
Cal will host Fresno State on Tuesday, Apr. 16 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Bears then travel to Arizona State for a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Apr. 19 at 7 p.m. at Hohokam Park in Mesa, AZ.
Arizona: Hassey, solo home run in the sixth inning.
Cal: Conley, solo home run in the first inning. Nelson, solo home run in the seventh inning.
