April 14, 2002

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Arik Van Zandt went 3-for-4 with a key three-run home run Sunday and the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal defeated the USC Trojans, 15-4, in Pac-10 Conference action at Sunken Diamond. Van Zandt capped a four-run fifth inning that broke a 2-2 tie as the Cardinal took two of three games from the Trojans.

Stanford improves to 25-8 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-10 while USC falls to 20-16 and 6-3 in Pac-10 play. The Trojans are now a half-game back of first place Arizona State, who took two of three this weekend at UCLA.

John Hudgins (6-0) went seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, to get the win for the Cardinal. Freshman J.P. Howell (3-4) took the loss for the Trojans, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Stanford scored first with two runs in the second. Left fielder Danny Putnam hit an RBI single to center and catcher Ryan Garko followed with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Trojans tied the game on solo homers by Brian Barre in the third and Alberto Concepcion in the fourth.

The momentum changed in the bottom of the fifth when Garko hit a ground ball that was booted by USC second baseman Anthony Lunetta. Jason Cooper walked and both runners advanced on a fly ball by right fielder Carlos Quentin. Center fielder Sam Fuld hit an RBI single to left field, followed by Van Zandt's homer to left.

Stanford added four more runs in the sixth and six in the seventh. In the seventh, Cooper hit his third home run of the series with a three-run blast to right, his 10th of the season, off reliever Chad Clark. Brian Hall hit another three-run shot to left later in the inning as the Cardinal scored 13 unanswered runs.

The Cardinal hit a total of 11 home runs off Trojan pitchers in the three-game series.

Senior first baseman Bill Peavey went 1-for-4 for the Trojans, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
