Barden Sets OSU Career Hits Record

April 15, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Brian Barden set Oregon State's record for career hits as the Beavers beat Hawai'i-Hilo 11-0 in non-league baseball Monday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Barden's line drive to centerfield in the fourth inning gave him 207 hits, surpassing the mark of 206 set by Ken Bowen from 1984-87, Barden had tied Bowen's record with a single up the middle in the first inning.

OSU (23-12 overall, 3-3 Pacific-10) completed a four-game sweep of the Vulcans (9-34-1) with the win. The Beavers, who have won 19 of their last 25 games, now host UCLA in a Pac-10 series this weekend with games Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

'Getting the sweep was important for us, and it gives us some momentum going into this series with UCLA,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Any time, any series, when you win all the games, you've done a good thing. I don't care who is playing who, sweeping a series is a tough thing to do, especially a four-game series.'

The Beavers' last four-game sweep came over Portland State near the end of the 1998 season. This time, the sweep of UHH was clinched when five OSU pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter as the game was called after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.

Oregon State backed that pitching with a 12-hit attack that included Barden's record-breaking singles in a 2-for-4 day, Tom Creighton's run-scoring double that extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and Andy Jarvis' fifth homer of the season. The Beavers also got triples from Seth Pietsch and Aaron Mathews, extending their school record to 24, OSU had seven triples in the series against Hawai'i-Hilo.

The two-hit day has become almost routine for Barden, who's batting .509 since March 24. That stretch of 27 hits in 13 games put Barden on top of Bowen's record in a hurry.

'I had no idea I was even close,' said the junior third baseman, who has shots at setting the Beaver records for career runs, runs batted in and total bases by the end of the season. 'One day, all of this will hit me, but I don't pay attention to stats too much. That record is a great thing to have.'

Added Casey: 'It's hard to believe. He sets that record in the middle of his third season, and Bowen was here for four years and he was a hitting machine. I tip my hat to the guy.'

Joshua Garcia pitched into the fifth inning and earned the win, evening his record at 2-2. He'd been scheduled to go just four innings, but got through those on few enough pitches that OSU's coaching staff sent him out to face two more hitters.

Mike Ekstrom, Jake Postlewait, Craig Hays and Don Stykel combined to complete the shutout, OSU's second of the season, the Beaver quintet allowed just two walks and struck out nine. The only hits the Vulcans managed were Daniel Rhodes' bunt single to start the third inning and Darren Chu's single up the middle with two out in the eighth.

Oregon State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Chris Biles' sacrifice fly, then made it 4-0 with a three-run fourth that included Paul Richie's RBI single and a pair of unearned runs. Jarvis' two-run homer to right put OSU up 7-0 in the fifth, and the Beavers capped the scoring with a four-run seventh that featured run-scoring doubles by Wick Udy and Creighton.

Mathews was 3-for-4 with a triple for OSU while Pietsch and Jarvis were both 2-for-4. The triple was Pietsch's sixth of the spring, tying him for second on the Beavers' all-time list of season leaders and leaving him just one short of the record seven hit by Abino Vazquez in 1997.
