Mt. SAC Relays Next Stop For Cougar Track & Field

Washington State will take a larger than usual contingent of competitors to the 44th Mt. San Antonio College Relays this weekend at Walnut, Calif...the four-day meet begins Thursday and runs through Sunday...among the thousands of participants competing at Hilmer Lodge Stadium will be youth, prep, junior college, university and elite athletes including many Olympians...levels for collegians include University, Open and Invitational...qualifying standards separate the athletes into these levels...Steve Dwyer will compete in the decathlon which will be staged at Azusa Pacific College April 18-19...Dwyer will look to improve upon his NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7,229 points achieved at the UC Multi Events (3/29) and grad at least 7,500 points for an automatic qualifying mark...the weekend portions of the Mt. SAC are scheduled to begin before 8 a.m. and run until 11 p.m. Friday and 10 p.m. Saturday...Sunday's schedule runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 29th season with the Cougar track program (eighth year as a head coach, seventh year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...Sloan, was selected the United States Track Coaches Association West Region Men's Coach of the Year for the 2002 indoor season...this is the second consecutive year Sloan has been named the men's coach of the year...he was honored as the regional women's coach of the year for both 1999 and 2000...Sloan is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Dr. James Li, Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, and Francesca Green...volunteer coaches are Dan O'Brien and Bernard Lagat.

Cougar coach Rick Sloan will be on the WSU Sports Information Weekly Teleconference Tuesday, April 9, from 1:15 p.m. until 1:25 p.m...interested media members should call the WSU Sports Information Office at 509/335-COUG (2684) for the phone number and password.

The April 9, Trackwire Top 25, the Washington State women's team is tied with Florida for 14th while the men are not ranked...Trackwire, an online service, uses the weekly rankings to project the outcome of the 2002 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field the USTCA Team Power Rankings as of Apr. 16, the Cougar women are third and the men are seventh...the Team Power Rankings are dual meet predictors and demonstrate team depth.

Cougar sophomore distance runner Beth Welander (Gig Harbor) is the recipient of the Honors College Leff Family Education Abroad Scholarship for the 2002-03 school year.

The WSU men won 12 of 19 events and scored 113 points toIdaho's 86 in dual meet action at Pullman. The WSU women nearly doubled up the Vandals, 129-66, winning16 of the 19 events on the warm but very windy day. WSU senior decathlete Steve Dwyer captured three events Saturday: 110m hurdles (14.41w), 400m hurdles (53.84) and the high jump (6-6 3/4). WSU's Tiffany Giles won the 200m (24.11w), 400m (55.95) and ran the second leg of the 4x100m relay (46.11). Cougar Cicely Clinkenbeard scored wins in the women's long jump (18-8w) and triple jump (41-4 1/4w). As expected, the Cougar women claimed all the throwing wins while the Vandal men grabbed three of four events. WSU freshmen Marie Maui (discus, 150-1), Brittany Hinchcliffe (hammer, 167-10) and Rachel Bertholf (javelin, 150-10) were joined by sophomore Shannon Rance (shot put 45-11 3/4) in the win column. Cougar freshman Matt McGee's win in the javelin (PR 215-7) spoiled the Vandal dominance in the throws. Tamara Gulley led the WSU women in a one-two-three finish in the 100m hurdles. Gulley's time of 14.17w was followed by Ellannee Richardson's 14.27w and Randi Smith's 14.33w.
