CALIFORNIA will try to improve on its .500 Conference mark as it visits ARIZONA STATE this weekend. The Sun Devils will try and protect their first-place spot in the standings as they are just a half-game in front of USC ...

There was little movement in the rankings this week for STANFORD or ASU, as the Cardinal remains No. 2 in the Baseball America and Baseball Weekly polls. Stanford dropped to No. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball poll. The Sun Devils remain ranked at No. 23 by Baseball America and No. 22 by Collegiate Baseball, but did move up two spots to No. 14 in the Baseball Weekly poll ...

With 12 Conference games completed, ARIZONA, Arizona State and California have reached the halfway point in the Pac-10 season. The Wildcats' remaining league series include games against USC, UCLA, WASHINGTON and WASHINGTON STATE. ASU will face Cal, Stanford, USC and OREGON STATE while Cal's remaining Conference series are against the Sun Devils, Huskies, Cardinal and Beavers.

ARIZONA (24-15, 5-7)

Arizona won its first Pac-10 series of the season taking two game in Berkeley ... The Wildcats outscored the Golden Bears 27-15 and knocked out six home runs during the series ... SO CF/P Brian Anderson hit his second grand slam of the year in Arizona's 18-9 win over Cal. The bases loaded homer was the fifth of the season for the Wildcats, establishing a new school record for most grand slams in a single season ... SR SS Brad Hassey is currently riding an 11-game hitting streak, his longest of the season. Hassey has the second-best batting average on the team, hitting at a .325 clip. He leads the squad with 54 hits, 78 total bases and 11 stolen bases ... SO RHP Marc Kaiser was named to Baseball America's Midseason All-America Team. Kaiser was named as one of the country's top sophomores as a utility player. He leads the team with 36 runs scored and has put together a 5-2 record including two complete games on the hill ... Arizona leads the league in runs (304), RBI (264), walks (192) and is third in the Pac-10 with a 4.42 ERA ... The 'Cats take a week off from Conference play and host Grand Canyon for a midweek game and UC Riverside for a three-game series this weekend.

ARIZONA STATE (24-13, 8-4)
Last Week: at UCLA W 4-3 (11), L 2-10, W 15-2 This Week: *California
ASU won its eighth consecutive Pac-10 series winning two games at UCLA last weekend. ASU played at Jackie Robinson Stadium for the first time since 1999. The Sun Devils have now won six of the last nine games in the series dating back to 2000 ... SO OF Rod Allen delivered the game-winning hit in the 11th inning in ASU's 4-3 opening win against UCLA. The extra-inning contest marked the first for the Sun Devils this season ... SO Ryan Schroyer has been one of ASU's toughest pitchers this year. The right-hander leads the Conference in opposing batting average (.215) and is second in ERA (2.35). He is tops on the Sun Devils' staff in ERA, appearances (16) and saves (3). He opened the season as a starter, but has since become the Sun Devils' closer and has 29 strikeouts in 18.2 bullpen innings. He has allowed just one earned run over that span for a 0.48 ERA ... FR SS Dustin Pedroia did well at the plate against the Bruins hitting .357 (5-for-14), but has been most impressive in the field, committing just two errors in 139 total chances ... Sophomores Andre Ethier and Jeremy West were named to Baseball America's Midseason All-America Team ... The Sun Devils are continually trying to improve offensively and have now used 21 consecutive different starting batting lineups ... Head coach Pat Murphy will coach in his 1,000th career game this weekend against California.

CALIFORNIA (23-18, 6-6)

The Golden Bears are .500 in Conference play after winning just one of three games in last weekend's Pac-10 series against Arizona ... Cal received its second consecutive Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor, as SO RHP Matt Brown earned this week's honor for the Bears. Brown, who is Cal's closer and second in the Pac-10 with six saves, threw his first complete game for a 2-1 win over the Wildcats. Brown improved his record to 4-1, allowing just one run on four hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts ... Last week's Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week recipient, SR RHP Trevor Hutchinson, is now just 10 K's away from becoming the school's all-time strikeout leader ... Several Bears made the Baseball America's Midseason All-America Team list. Those players selected from Cal include FR 3B David Nicholson, 1B Conor Jackson, and Hutchinson ... Cal has a knack for finding its way to the plate as the Bears lead the league in at-bats (1421), total plate appearances (1655) and hits (410). The Bears have also pitched the most innings in the Conference with 371.0 innings pitched.

OREGON STATE (22-12, 3-3)
Last Week: Hawaii-Hilo W 10-2, 11-9, 21-3 This Week: *UCLA
OSU soundly defeated Hawaii-Hilo in three games last weekend, outscoring their visiting opponents 42-14 ... Head coach Pat Casey recorded his 400th career win when the Beavers beat Hawaii-Hilo 11-9 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The game ended up being postponed due to rain and finished on Sunday. Casey is now 401-277-5 in his career ... OSU's Goss Stadium got its first look at night baseball in its 96-year history on Saturday. Nearly two hours of rain delays pushed the start time of the second game of a doubleheader back until 5 p.m. and the lights went on a half-hour later. OSU has not announced the date and time of what will be the first regularly scheduled night game at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field ... Utility player, JR Tom Creighton, notched six RBI on one hit in Sunday's 21-3 win over Hawaii-Hilo. Creighton started with a pair of sac flies, then had a grand slam to cap the Beavers' 14-run sixth inning.

STANFORD (25-8, 4-2)
Last Week: San Jose State W 5-4, USC W 6-5 (10), L 11-16, W 15-4 This Week: Saint Mary's, *at Washington
Stanford captured its 12th straight regular season series win a 2-1 weekend against USC. Stanford has now won 17 of its last 21 games ... It was quite the offensive series, as the Cardinal hit 11 home runs in the three games, while the Trojans tallied three ... JR DH Jason Cooper earned his first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for his efforts in the USC series and a midweek game against San Jose State. Cooper hit .400 (6-for-15), knocked out four home runs and drove in 10 runs while adding a double and six runs scored. On the season he is batting .400 with a career-high 10 home runs and team-high 39 RBI in 30 games played ... The Cardinal outscored the Trojans 32-25 and now has 24 games posting double-digit in hits and 10 games with double-digits in runs ... Three Cardinal players made it on the Baseball America's Midseason All-America Team list. SO CF Sam Fuld, JR DH Cooper and JR RHP Jeremy Guthrie all earned midseason honors.

UCLA (15-22, 2-4)
Last Week: at Pepperdine L 3-4, Arizona State L 3-4 (11), W 10-2, L 2-15 This Week: at UC Riverside, *at Oregon State
UCLA lost two of its five games last week in the final inning. The Bruins have lost eight games in the final inning this year, including seven on the last pitch of the game ... FR RHP David Johnson was impressive on the mound against at Pepperdine. He shutout the Waves in 6.0 innings and allowed just four hits. In his two starts this season, he has not allowed a run and has given up just five hits in 11.0 innings pitched ... FR Wes Whisler earned UCLA's lone win over ASU. The lefty allowed just two earned runs on six hits in 7.1 innings of work. He is 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in Pac-10 play ... SR 2B Ryan Rasmussen is hitting .480 in Conference play, and has stolen five bases. He has walked four times and struck out just once in 25 at-bats ... JR LHP Mike Kunes has not allowed a run in 5.2 relief innings of Pac-10 play. He has allowed just one hit and struck out eight batters. Conference opponents are batting just .067 against him.

USC (20-16, 6-3)
Last Week: Cal State Fullerton W 6-2, at Stanford L 5-6 (10), W 16-11, L 4-15 This Week: Loyola Marymount, *at WSU
Despite losing its Pac-10 series at Stanford, USC is just a half-game back of first-place Arizona State in the Conference standings ... The Trojans have won eight of their last 11 games ... USC's 16-11 win marked the most runs the Cardinal has been tagged for since the Trojans defeated the Cardinal 17-15 at Sunken Diamond in April of 1999 ... SR 1B Bill Peavey is riding a 10-game hitting streak. Over the series at Stanford, he batted .364 (4-for-11) with two doubles, two runs scored and four RBI ... Trojan pitchers had a tough time at Sunken Diamond giving up 11 home runs on the weekend ... The Trojans are batting .315 as a team, good for second best in the Pac-10 ... USC plays a non-conference midweek game at home against Loyola Marymount before venturing back out on the road to play at Washington State. Last year USC swept the Cougars.

WASHINGTON (15-17-1, 3-6)
Last Week: UC Irvine W 6-4, L 3-7, WSU L 2-4, W 10-9, 11-7 This Week: Lewis-Clark State, *Stanford
The Huskies won three of five games last week, registering victories over UC Irvine and in-state rival, Washington State ... FR C Aaron Hathaway played well last week, catching every inning of all five games. He fielded flawlessly, with no passed balls or errors while throwing out three of nine would-be basestealers. He also performed at the plate, batting .500 (8-for-16) with three runs scored, his first career home run and four RBI ... JR 1B Bryan Johnson hit a homer from each side of the plate in Saturday's win over WSU. That marked the first time the switch-hitter has done that in his career in the same game ... JR SS Tila Reynolds has been hit by a pitch 14 times this season and has a shot at Washington's record of 19 in a season. As a team, the Huskies have been hit by 52 pitches, on pace to be plunked 88 times this year, which would place them third in Pac-10 history ... JR OF Jay Garthwaite was named to the Baseball America Midseason All-America Team.

Last Week: at Washington W 4-2, L 9-10, 7-11 This Week: *USC
Washington State won the first game in its Pac-10 series against Washington, but dropped the next two falling to 2-7 in Conference play ... The Cougars posted double-digits in hits of each game, out-hitting the Huskies in the series, 38-34, but were outscored 23-20 ... The Cougars are batting .310 as a team, good for fourth in the Pac-10 ... JR Eddie Bonine had his second consecutive solid outing on the hill. The right-hander pitched eight innings of five-hit ball, allowing no earned runs with 10 strikeouts in WSU's 4-2 win over Washington. Last week he pitched a complete game three-hitter against ASU. He is 6-4 on the season, and his six wins ties him for third in the Conference. He ranks sixth in the Pac-10 in strikeouts (58) ... WSU returns home this weekend to host USC at Bailey-Brayton Field.
