No. 17 Cal Vies for Pac-10 Title

CAL TRAVELS TO PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS:
The No. 17 California women's golf team travels to the 16th-annual Pac-10 Championships, Mon.-Wed., April 22-24, in search of its first ever league title. The event takes place at the Walla Walla Country Club (par 72, 6,199 yards) in Walla Walla, Wash. Washington State is the tournament host for the 54-hole championship. The 10 Pac-10 teams play 18 holes each day, with rounds beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday and 8 a.m. on Wednesday. An awards ceremony and the announcment of the 2002 All-Pac-10 team follow the completion of the tournament.

BEARS HISTORY AT PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS:
In 2000, Cal finished fourth at the Pac-10 Championships for its best finish at the event. Last year, the Bears placed sixth with a program league-championship best 54-hole score of 891. Cal even led after the first round with an even-par 288. Vikki Laing placed fourth with an even-par 216, the highest finish and best score ever for a Cal golfer at Pac-10s. BEARS FINISH RUNNER-UP AT PEG BARNARD COLLEGIATE:
Cal continued its rise on the national scene with a second-place finish at the Peg Barnard California Collegiate April 13-14, at the Stanford Golf Course. The Bears matched the best round of the day at 296 to finish at 599, six strokes back of No. 19 Washington (593), which also fired a final round of 296. Vikki Laing and Sarah Huarte led Cal by tying for fourth with a three-over-par 147.
CAL SHOOTS 14 ROUNDS UNDER 300 IN 2001-02:
Fourteen of the 24 rounds Cal has played as a team this year have produced rounds under 300. This includes seven of 13 rounds this spring. The Bears team stroke average is 299.3, which is on pace to shatter last year's school record of 306.2.
BEARS WIN THREE TOURNAMENTS:
Cal has won a school record three tournaments this season - Oregon State Invite, Bay Area Classic and the Spartan Invite.
BEARS IN THE INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS:
In the April 16 Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, three Cal golfers are ranked in the top 100 - Sarah Huarte (55), Vikki Laing (69) and Anne Walker (79). After finishing tied for 93rd at the NCAA Fall Preview to start the year in September, Huarte has rattled off eight-straight top 25 finishes.
