Mackovic Named to AFCA Board of Trustees

April 18, 2002

WACO, Texas - UA football coach John Mackovic has been selected to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association. It will be the Arizona mentor's second tour of service to the prestigious leadership arm of the national coaches group.

Mackovic served on the Board from 1993 to 1997 while the head coach at the University of Texas. His appointment gave the Arizona program two trustees in the past four years. Former UA head coach Dick Tomey served on the board in 1999 and 2000. One other Arizona coach has served on the AFCA Board of Trustees -- G.A.'Tex' Oliver, from 1935 to 1937. He was a fourth vice president in 1935.

The AFCA has two major concerns, the improvement of the coaching profession and improvement of the sport of football. It has nearly 30 committees staffed by member coaches, with such focuses as All-America selection, selection of a 'Good Works Team,' ethics, rules, assistant coaches, public relations, minority issues and various award committees, among others. The Board of Trustees is made up of 14 member head coaches and the chairman of the assistant coaches commitee as an ex officio member. Once appointed to the Board, a coach remains on it until he serves out his term as president to complete his board tenure, leaves the coaching profession, resigns his appointment or is removed by the board. Mackovic's last stint ended when he left Texas and worked for ESPN as a college football analyst until December 2000 when he was hired to coach the Wildcats.

Mackovic was elected to fill the vacancy in District 9 created when Tyrone Willingham moved to Notre Dame (and another district). Willingham remains on the board as an at-large member.

Mackovic served as chairman of the Ethics Committee for the Board from 1994 to 1998, and was third vice president in 1997, in addition to his time on the panel while at Texas.

He began his head coaching career at Wake Forest in 1978, coached quarterbacks for two years under Tom Landry for the Dallas Cowboys, was head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, head coach and athletics director at Illinois, and head coach at Texas during his 37-year coaching career.
