Half-Mile Victors Lead Huskies to Day One Leads at Bronco Invite
April 19, 2002
BOISE, Idaho - Sophomore Todd Arnold and freshman Lindsey Egerdahl swept the 800-meter races at today's Bronco Invitational, leading Washington to early leads on Northwest opponents through one day of action at the two-day meet, hosted by Boise State University.
Washington's women's squad maintains leads in each of its three dual-meet competitions, the narrowest margin a 47-38 edge over the University of Idaho. The Husky men, meanwhile, lead Idaho State by a 45-40 score, but trail the host Broncos, 50-34.
Arnold, a Pac-10 qualifier at 1500 meters, ran 1:53.2 (hand-timed) in the men's race, leading five Husky runners among the race's top six finishers. Egerdahl faced no such competition in her race, running away from the pack for a 2:15.0h finish, two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Lindsey Dewey of Boise State
Sophomore Rianna Moore, a native of Marysville, Wash., outran Idaho's Vornee Samuel to the line in the 200 meters by one tenth of the second to earn the first victory of her career, clocking a 24.5-second (hand-timed) mark that is just one tenth shy of the Pac-10 qualifying standard, and two tenths shy of Washington's all-time top-10.
Also on the victory stand for Washington was senior Kelsey Sheppard, who led a 1-2-3 sweep by Husky athletes in the 400-meter hurdles. Sheppard, already an NCAA qualifier in the event, crossed the line in 1:01.3 (hand-timed) for her sixth victory of the year, just ahead of freshman teammate Cambrielle Jensen (1:02.1h) and Husky senior Shavon Hawkins (1:03.7h)..
A handful of Washington's athletes also competed today at the elite Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Results from this meet were not available as of the 10 p.m. posting of this release, but will be included in full in a recap of tomorrow's events at both the Bronco Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays.
