UCLA Prepares for Pac-10 Championship at Washington State

The UCLA women's golf team, with six top 10 finishes this season, will play in the 16th Pacific-10 Conference Women's Golf Championship, hosted by Washington State at Walla Walla Country Club, Apr. 22-24.

The Bruins will field a team of three freshmen, two sophomores and a senior for an event in which they finished seventh last season.

In their last appearance, the Bruins finished eighth at the Peg Barnard Invitational, hosted at the Stanford Golf Course. The Bruins posted a 36-hole team score of 621, 45-over par.

In the Peg Barnard event, sophomore Gina Umeck tied for 21st place with a two-round total of 153. Umeck has finished in the top 10 in two of her last three tournaments, placing fourth at the Pioneer Bruin Classic last month, and tying for sixth place at the PING/ASU Tournament two weeks ago. She ranks third on the team with a scoring average of 75.6.

Freshman Yvonne Choe is tied for the team lead with a scoring average of 75.5. She posted a three-under par score of 69 in the final round of the ASU tournament and has placed among the top 20 in three of her last four events.

Senior Alicia Um is tied for the team lead with 75.5 scoring average. She tied for 24th place at the ASU tournament. At the Stanford/Pepsi Invitational in October, Um fired a final round, three-under par score of 69 to tie for 11th place. As a freshman in 1998, Um tied for seventh at the conference championships.

Sophomore Melissa Martin boasts one top 10 finish and two other top 20 finishes this season. She is averaging 76.0 strokes per round and a team-leading 88 percent of her scores have counted in team scoring.

Redshirt Freshman Kristin Thompson recorded her best collegiate finish by tying for 10th place at the Pioneer Bruin Classic. Last week she tied for 21st place at the Stanford event. She is expected to compete as an individual at at the conference championship.
