Peavey Does It Again In Baseball's 15-3 Win

PULLMAN, Wash. - Bill Peavey went 3-for-3 with two home runs and a career-high six RBI Saturday and the USC Trojans defeated the Washington State Cougars, 15-3, in Pac-10 Conference action at Bailey-Brayton Field. Peavey hit a grand slam in the first inning and followed with a solo shot to lead off the ninth for his eighth and ninth home runs of the season, respectively.
USC improves to 23-16 on the season and 8-4 in Pac-10 Conference play while Washington State falls to 14-22 overall and 2-9 in conference play. The Trojans have won 11 of their last 14 games.
Peavey for the series is 8-for-8 with three doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. He now has a 13-game hitting streak and is batting .542 (26-for-48) with eight doubles, five home runs and 25 RBI. He is also batting .684 (13-for-19) in his last five games.
Junior Alberto Concepcion went 4-for-5 for the Trojans with three RBI and is 8-for-11 for the series with two triples and seven RBI.
The Trojans scored six runs in the first inning. Brian Barre and Michael Moon both singled and Joey Metropoulos walked to load the bases for Peavey, who hit the grand slam to right field. Concepcion hit a triple off the top of the fence in right and scored on a double by Anthony Lunetta. Lunetta scored on a groundout by Travis McAndrews to complete the scoring in the first.
Moon went 3-for-5 while Metropoulos was 1-for-1, scoring four times with three walks. Metropoulos has six walks in the series.
Freshman Matt Chico (6-3) picked up the win with six scoreless innings, allowing two hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Washington State scored three in the bottom of the ninth to avoid the shutout as USC improved to 46-10 all-time in the series between the two schools.
The Trojans will conclude their series with the Cougars tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
