Track Results from Mt. SAC Meet
April 20, 2002
WALNUT, Calif. -- The competition is plentiful but the results are not easily obtained for the forty members of the Washington State track and field squad at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays.
Cougar highlights from the Friday afternoon and evening competition included Brittany Hinchcliffe breaking the WSU freshman school hammer record with a Pac-10 qualifying toss of 172-feet even (52.42m). Hinchcliffe, from Olympia, Wash., already owns the freshman indoor record for the 20# weight. She surpassed training partner Andrea Thornton's 1998 mark of 171-1 (52.30m) set in Eugene. Sammy Jo Missel threw the hammer 152-6 (46.48m).
Jon Welsh finished fourth in the steeplechase with a time of 8 minutes, 54.7h seconds, just missing an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark by 94/100s of a second. In another section of the same race, Scott Johnson finished fifth with a time of 9:10.2h.
In men's distance races, Oscar Franco-Parra finished 16th in the 10,000m Invitational race with a time of 29:50.48. In the University/Open 10k race, Mike Heidt had a final time of 30:38.48. Danny Wolf ran a lifetime best men's 5k in 14:17.11 for 12th place.
Among the field events, Jamil Smith won the men's University/Open long jump with a leap of 23-2 (7.06m) while Blessing Ufodiama was third in the women's Univ./Open long jump with a mark of 18-5 1/4 (5.62m). Cicely Clinkenbeard was fourth in this event but no mark was provided.
On the track, Tiffany Giles was second in her 400m heat with a time of 54.62. Dione Cason was also second but in the men's 400m heat with a time of 48.11.
The rest of the Cougar competitors wrap-up the Mt. SAC competition Sunday and hopefully the results from the other events Saturday will catch-up then.
