April 22, 2002

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The 17th-ranked California women's golf team is in third place after the opening round of the Pac-10 Championship Monday at Walla Walla Country Club. The Pac-10 arguably is the toughest conference for women's golf in the country, as seven of the 10 teams are ranked in the top 30 and six are in the top 20. Cal recorded its best conference finish in 2000 when it placed fourth.

The Golden Bears carded a 299 and enter tomorrow's second round only six strokes back of first-place and seventh-ranked Arizona (293). No. 14 USC is in second at 297. No. 28 Stanford is one stroke behind at Cal at 300, and No. 20 UCLA is fifth at 301.

Sophomore Sarah Huarte led the Bears on the opening day, firing a one-over-par 73 to tie for fifth. She shot a one-under on the front nine. The Shingle Springs, Calif., product has finished in the top 25 in her last eight tournaments for Cal.

Also in the top 10 for Cal were junior Vikki Laing and senior Anne Walker, who both shot a 75 to tie for 10th. Junior Ria Quiazon and sophomore Claire Dury also had solid outings for the Bears, posting 76s to tie for 16th.

UCLA's Yvonne Choe and USC's Mikaela Parmlid sit atop the leader board at one-under 71. Arizona State's Jimin Kang and Arizona's Lorena Ochoa, the nation's No. 1 golfer, are tied for third at 72.

The 54-hole tournament continues Tuesday with 18 holes beginning at 9 a.m., and wraps up Wednesday with the final round teeing off at 8 a.m.
