Arizona Wins Pacific-10 Women's Golf Championship

April 24, 2002

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Arizona State's Jimin Kang captured individual medalist honors at the Pacific-10 Women's Golf Championships, Wednesday at the Walla Walla Country Club.

Kang, who entered the final round in fourth place three shots back of UCLA's Yvonne Choe, fired a two-under par 70 to complete the 54-hole tournament at even par 216. Kang's 70 tied for the tournament's best final round with Washington's Louise Friberg. Kang, a sophomore from Edmonds, Wash., recorded a birdie on two of the final three holes.

Kang edged Arizona's Lorena Ochoa by one stroke and USC Mikaela Parmlid by two. Ochoa and Parmlid, who were paired together in the tournament's final threesome with Choe, were tied with Kang at even par on the 17th tee. However both players bogeyed the hole to fall one shot back of the Sun Devil. Needing birdie on 18, both Parmlid and Ochoa missed puts that would have forced a playoff.

In the team competition, Arizona won its third consecutive Pacific-10 Tournament title and the fifth conference championship in the last six seasons.

The Wildcats shot a six over 294 in the final round to finish at 27 over (891) and defeat runner-up UCLA (899, +35) by eight strokes.

Host Washington State's best finisher was freshman Jay-Lee Longbottom. The Perth, Australia native shot four over 76 in the final round and finished tied for 17th (230, +14). Donna Bell who shot a one over 73 turned in the Cougars' best performance of the day.

Washington State finished eighth, 20 strokes ahead of Oregon State and 28 shots better than Oregon.
