Bruins Host Miller Cup

Los Angeles - The UCLA women's rowing team competes at home this Saturday, April 27, in Marina del Rey, Calif. for the Norman P. Miller Cup. Saturday's events, hosted by the UCLA men's rowing club team, features 28 events and 11 participating schools - UCLA, Loyola Marymount, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, San Diego State, Long Beach State, Chapman University, the University of San Diego, Orange Coast College, and Occidental. Preliminary races will commence in the morning, with the first and second place finishers in each heat qualifying for the grand and petite finals, respectively, held in the early afternoon. The winner of the Varsity 8 Grand Final will receive the 2002 Miller Cup. The regatta is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. with the last crews racing at 1:24 p.m.
The Bruins have entered five crews for the day's events, the Novice 4, Varsity 4, Novice 8, JV 8, and Varsity 8. They are scheduled to compete at 8:10 a.m., 8:50 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 10:10 a.m., and 10:40 a.m., respectively. This is the second time this season that UCLA will race a Varsity 4 (last vs. USC on March 30) and the first time that a Novice 4 crew will compete.
The Varsity Eights
Among the Varsity Eights, the Bruins have competed against five of its seven competitors this season - LMU, San Diego State, Long Beach State, Chapman, and USD.
UCLA last competed against Loyola for the Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup on April 13. The Lions defeated the Bruins by 8-seconds to retain the cup. Loyola also competed at the San Diego Crew Classic on April 6-7, winning the Women's Cal Cup Petite Final.
UCLA last competed against San Diego State at the San Diego Crew Classic on April 6. The Aztecs finished fourth in Heat A of the Women's Cal Cup, 5-seconds faster than the fifth place Bruins. The Aztecs advanced to the Women's Cal Cup Petite Finals, finishing fifth.
The Bruins have competed against Long Beach State three times this season and lead the series 3-0. UCLA last competed against Long Beach State at the San Diego Crew Classic on April 6, finishing 8-seconds ahead of the Forty-Niners in Heat A of the Women's Cal Cup.
UCLA last competed against Chapman University on March 23, at the Berg Cup in Newport Beach, Calif. The Bruins, placing third in the cup race, defeated the Panthers by 22-seconds.
The Bruins have competed against the University of San Diego women's crew team twice this season and trail the series 0-2. The teams last competed on April 6, at the San Diego Crew Classic in Heat A of the Women's Cal Cup. The Toreros defeated the Bruins by 8-seconds and qualified for the Women's Cal Cup Petite Finals, where they finished fourth. USD also won the Berg Cup earlier this season on March 23.
Rounding off the Varsity Eights, UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego are also among teams competing for the Miller Cup.
The Bruins last competed at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, April 20, defeating the Santa Clara Broncos in both the Varsity 8 and the Novice 8. In a late addition to the day's events, the UCLA Second Novice 8 dueled the Stanford Lightweight Varsity 8, but the Cardinal defeated the Bruins by about 10-seconds.

Parking will be available at the Fisherman's Village/Dock 52 (5 minutes walk from the Aquatic Center).
