Carrie Leary Voted Pac-10 Coach of the Year

April 24, 2002

UCLA women's golf coach Carrie Leary was voted 2002 Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year and freshman Yvonne Choe earned Newcomer of the Year honors, the conference announced Wednesday.

Leary guided the Bruins to a second place finish Wednesday at the Pac-10 Championships. UCLA's conference finish was its highest since 1996. In her three seasons as head coach, Leary has guided the Bruins to three tournament victories and last year led them to a fifth place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Choe, 18, held the 36-hole lead at the conference tournament before closing with a 76 in the final round to tie for fourth place. This season, the freshman from Temple City, has finished among the top 10 twice and placed among the top 20 four times. Wednesday's finish was her best of the season. In 2000, she advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.

Choe also was voted to the All-Pac-10 Second Team. Teammates Gina Umeck and Alicia Um were named all-conference honorable mention.
