No. 1 Cal Men's Varsity Eight Ready for Third-Ranked Huskies

April 25, 2002

NO.1 CAL RACES NO. 3 WASHINGTON: The No. 1 Cal men's crew hosts No. 3 Washington at Redwood Shores, April 27. Racing is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.

CAL MEN'S CREW 2002: The Cal men's crew's approach to its 2002 season is similar to those that it used to put some of the most successful crews in the history of U.S. collegiate rowing on the water in 1999, 2000 and '01. Simply stated, the Bears focus is on sound technical rowing, pulling harder than their adversaries, and moving their racing shells over the 2000-meter race course more efficiently than the competition.

The Bears return 17 letterwinners to aid in the pursuit of these goals including: six Olympians, eight varsity IRA National champions, two JV IRA national champions and four varsity coxed four IRA national champions. Combining this group of gold medalists with eight of nine oarsmen from the 2001 IRA bronze-winning frosh eight creates the intense intrasquad competition necessary for crews to compete at the highest level.

SCHOCH CUP HISTORY The men's varsity racing series for the Schoch Cup dates back to 1903. Washington leads the series with Cal, 63-27-1. Last year in Seattle, the Cal varsity eight defeated Washington by 9.2 seconds.

LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING: At first glance, Cal's 13-consecutive wins over the Huskies in all regattas since the 1999 San Diego Crew Classic could suggest a rebuilding period in Seattle, however, nothing could be further from the truth. Over that time period, Washington has consistently been ranked in the Top 5 and have placed third, fourth and third at the IRA National Championships.

SIMPLE MATH: No. 3 Washington defeated No. 6 Wisconsin by 3.2 seconds on April 20 and No. 1 Cal defeated the Badgers by 5.3 seconds on April 21. Thus, 5.3-3.2=The undisputed best collegiate dual race in the country this season!

STANFORD INVITATIONAL RECAP: The No. 1 ranked Cal men's varsity eight defeated No. 6 Wisconsin by five seconds in dual racing on the Redwood Shores Lagoon, April 21. The undefeated, defending IRA National champion Bears covered the course in a time of 5:40.43. In the varsity event, Cal and Wisconsin both got off to strong starts and the Bears edged out to the slimmest of margins through the 500-meter mark. Cal continued to press the pace, but the Badgers hung tight and were still within striking distance-only a half length down-as the crews crossed the 1000. Cal's varsity eight, however, erased all hope for the Badgers with a fast second 1000 going on to win by 5.3 seconds. On Saturday, April 20, the Cal men's varsity eight defeated No. 8 Oregon State by a length of open water. The Bears took a two-second advantage in the first 500 meters of the race and extended the margin to a full length as the crews reached the midway point on the race course. Cal broke the race open in the third 500 moving out to a half-length of open water advantage by the 1500.
