No. 62 Arizona Men's Tennis Finishes Day One of Pac-10 ChampionshipsSophomore Whi Kim Advances to the Quarterfinals

Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's tennis team (9-12) completed the first day of the Pac-10 Championships held in Ojai, Calif., on Thursday.

Senior Steven Capriati, ranked No. 35 by the ITA played in the opening round of 32 and topped Ari Strasberg in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, to advance to the round of 16. Then Capriati faced Ryan Haviland and fell in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Sophomore Whi Kim was also victorious in the opening round of 32 against Balazs Veress; Kim beat Veress by a score of 6-4, 7-6. In the round of 16 Kim defeated Matt Klinger, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday. Sophomore Carl Hagman fell to John Paul Fruttero, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round and junior Tom Lloyd lost to Matt Hanlin, 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round.

In other action four Wildcats participated in the invitational section of the championships.

The Wildcats are back in action Friday, April 26 for day one of doubles competition and continuing singles play.
