No. 8 Cal Women's Crew Hosts No. 1 Washington

NO. 8 CAL RACES NO. 1 WASHINGTON: The No. 8 Cal women's crew will cross the Bay to take on No. 1 Washington in dual racing, April 27 at Redwood Shores. Racing is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.

CAL WOMEN'S CREW 2002: After its third-consecutive team invitation to the NCAA Championships Regatta, Cal women's crew is established as one of the premier programs in the country, and looks to challenge for the 2002 national title. Fourth-year head coach Dave O'Neill returns nearly his entire team from 2001, which placed sixth at NCAAs last May.The youth which marked last season has developed into experience, as 18 of the 20 rowers who competed at the 2001 NCAA Championships return. These athletes are more skilled and seasoned, and O'Neill is proud and impressed with the development of the squad.

COMPETITION: The Washington Huskies are ranked No. 1 in the USRowing/CRCA Coaches poll. UW is undefeated on the season including a victory in the Jessop-Whittier Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic, April 7. The Huskies are coming off victories over Washington State and Wisconsin on April 13.

WASHINGTON DUAL HISTORY: The women's varsity racing series with Washington dates back to 1975. The Bears dual race record versus the Huskies is 7-20. Cal has not defeated Washington in dual race competition since 1990 at the Oakland Estuary.

STANFORD INVITATIONAL RECAP: The No. 8 Cal women's varsity eight posted victories over No. 20 Oregon State and Kansas in dual racing at the Stanford Invititational on the Redwood Shores Lagoon, April 20. The varsity established themselves early leaders in both contests and look to be finding its stride during the heart of the dual race season. In racing against Oregon State, the Bears took the varsity eight and varsity four events, while the Beavers had the upper hand in the JV and novice eight events. In the afternoon stanza versus Kansas, Cal nearly pulled off a sweep taking the varsity eight, JV eight and varsity 'A' four events. Kansas won the varsity 'B' four event.

USROWING/CRCA COACHES POLL: USRowing, in conjunction with the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) will conduct weekly polls for Women's NCAA Division I Collegiate Varsity Eights throughout the season. In the most recent poll released April 17, Cal is ranked No. 8.
