UW's Hanlin and Vlaski Advance to Quarterfinals of Pac-10 Championships

MALIBU, Ca. - Junior Matt Hanlin (Birmingham, England) and freshman Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pac-10 Championships Thursday evening at Libbey Park in Malibu, Calif.

Hanlin, in the first round of singles play, took Tom Lloyd of Arizona in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 and then came back Friday evening to defeat USC's Prakash Amritraj, 7-5, 6-4. Hanlin will face Tobias Clemens of UCLA in the quarterfinals. The two recently faced each other in Seattle where the Bruin claimed the match by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Vlaski defeated Oregon's Martin Pawlowski in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 in his opening match and Stanford's Scott Lipsky in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the Round of 16 to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal round, where he will go head to head with USC's Nick Rainey.

In other main draw action, Ari Strasberg (Ramat-Hasaron, Israel) was defeated by Steven Capriati of Arizona, 6-1, 7-5, while Christoph Palmanshofer (St. Georgen, Austria) was downed by Stanford's David Martin, 6-2, 6-4. Both will compete in consolation action beginning tomorrow morning.

Dillon Ruby (Westlake Village, Calif.), who fared well in last year's conference tournament has continued his success by advancing to the Invitational quarterfinals. Ruby had a bye in the first round and took Cardinal Chris Meyer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 16. Ruby, who now has 17 wins on the year, will face UCLA's Lassi Ketola in his match tomorrow.

Freshman Peter Scharler (Salzburg, Austria) also had a bye in the Invitational first round and was defeated 6-4, 6-4 by Colin O'Grady of Arizona in the second round. Nick Weiss (Santa Monica, Calif.) lost only his third match on the season to Arnaud Agniel of Arizona, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Scott Felsenthal (Memphis, Tenn.), playing in his fifth match on the year, was downed by Chris Stewart of ASU in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The Pac-10 quarterfinals of singles play will begin on Fri., April 26 at 8:00 a.m., with the first and second rounds of doubles action also beginning Friday morning. Washington duo Hanlin and Ruby will face ASU's Mitchell Bowen and Matt Klinger in the first round, while Strasberg and Vlaski will take on Steven Capriati and Carl Hagman of Arizona in the opening match.
