Three Bruins into Pac-10 Quarters

Ojai, Calif. - Three Bruin men's tennis players advanced to the quarterfinals in singles at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. on Thursday.

UCLA's top player Tobias Clemens won both of his matches, defeating Stanford's Sam Warburg, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the first round and Cal's Conor Niland, 6-1, 3-0 Ret. in the second. He will face Washington's Matt Hanlin in Friday's quarterfinals.

Bruin junior Rodrigo Grilli needed to rally in both of his matches after dropping the first set. He defeated Oregon's Manuel Kost, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 before knocking off Stanford's top player David Martin, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. He will take on Arizona's Whi Kim on Friday.

Marcin Matkowski was the other Bruin to win two matches on Thursday as he defeated ASU's Olivier Charroin, 6-3, 6-4 and Cal's Robert Kowalczyk, 6-2, 6-2. He will next face Stanford's Ryan Haviland.

The Bruins also had three players advance to the quarterfinals in the Pac-10 Invitational draw. After receiving a first-round bye, Erfan Djahangiri defeated Cal's Patrick Briaud, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. He will play Arizona's Arnaud Agniel on Friday. Lassi Ketola also received a first-round bye before defeating Arizona's Roeland Brateanu, 6-3, 6-1. He will next take on Washington's Dillon Ruby.

Bruin freshman Alberto Francis needed to win two matches to get into the quarterfinals. He defeated Stanford's Joe Kao, 6-4, 6-2 and Cal's Ben Miles, 6-3, 6-3. He will face Arizona's Colin O'Grady on Friday.

Doubles play also begins on Friday. UCLA's Matkowski and Rojer are the top-seeded team in the main draw. Complete results can be obtained at
